Background
Yunji Wu is s Senior Lecturer in the Chinese program. She is a graduate of Hunan Normal University in China and has a Ph.D in Linguistics from the linguistics Department, the University of Melbourne. She started to teach at this university in 1988.
Research Interests
Yunji Wu’s main research interest is Chinese linguistics, particularly Chinese dialectology. She has completed six projects on the dialects spoken in Hunan, China in which she acted as the chief investigator since she finished her doctoral degree in 1993. She has tried to create an innovative framework to describe the grammar of Sinitic languages, not only synchronically but also diachronically . Her approach and analyses have been received through both her conference papers and publications. This includes her monograph (1999) on aspect, published by the Ecoles des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Her recent monograph entitled A synchronic and diachronic study on the grammar of Chinese Xiang will be published in May 2005 for inclusion in Trends in Linguistics: Studies and Monographs, edited by Werner Win, Hans Henrich Hock and Walter Bisang (Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter). Currently she is working on an unclassified dialect named Waxiang spoken in western Hunan.
